Lately, there has been some discussion about what the official rules for calling shotgun are. Koz, Bryan and myself decided to set these one day while eating brunch. We were very hungover this particular day, as it was a Sunday. Well, these are the rules we came up with (feel free to make suggestions in the comments if you'd like):
- You must be outside to call shotgun. You don't have to see the car, but you must be outside. Outside an apartment, in the hallway but still in the building does not count.
- If traveling for one hour or longer, same rider may not have consecutive shotguns.
- When traveling long distances, shotgun is fair game after short stops, i.e. gas, food, firework or adult establishments.
- When traveling on long trips, person sitting shotgun may not fall asleep under any circumstances and must act as navigator if necessary. Person riding shotgun is in charge of music, unless the driver has a request.
- In the occasion that road sodas are being drank, person in shotgun is in charge of mixing and pouring of the liquids.

All these rules Stigs has laid out are definitely legit. Let me add a few clauses and confirmations before we publish this said Shotgun Constitution.
For road sodas...I think that should be the duty of someone in the back. Shotgun may have to make a crucial music change when Rihanna's "umbrella" comes on shuffle. Not to mention, the sticky eyes of Johnny Law can see a tipped up bottle of Ron Diaz easier when it is in the front seat. Shotgun has to hand the drink to the driver, or get it safely placed in the cup holder without spilling Sailor Jerry all over the car...(Stigs, on the way to Eagle River...when there is a cop behind us)
Next, what are the consequences of someone falling asleep in shotgun?
- A boot out of shotgun at the next stop
- Take the next exit, to kick them out of the privledged position?
- Or immediately pull off the road, drag their ungrateful ass out of the car for a ditch beating?
My last thought, can a 5's be called on Shotgun....I say absolutely not.
